On 4th April Merlin Inns Ltd was fined £90k at Guildford Magistrates Court for dishonestly receiving and showing Sky's broadcasts of live premier League football matches. The Company was also ordered, by agreement, to pay £28.5k costs.
The company, prosecuted by Miles Bennett, instructed by Matt Bosworth of Russel-Cooke solicitors pleaded guilty to 10 offences contrary to Section 297 (1) of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 in what was the largest prosecution of its type brought by FACT Ltd.
3 publicans working for the company also pleaded guilty to one offence each and were also fined. The case received widespread media coverage: BBC.
