Fraudulent Letting Agent Jailed

Andrew Johnson, prosecuting for the London Borough of Croydon, has secured the conviction of a letting agent who fraudulently obtained and retained holding deposits paid by tenants for properties which he had no authority to market, or which had already been let to other tenants.

Thirugnanaselvam Damayantharan, who had previously been convicted of similar offences, pleaded guilty to five counts of fraudulent trading on the fifth day of a trial that was due to last six weeks, after the court had heard evidence from twenty-two witnesses.

He was sentenced to a term of nineteen months' imprisonment and disqualified from acting as a director of a company for five years.
